"I hate to have to do this," said the voice on the telephone, but I must warn you that pastor so-and-so is teaching heresy."
"Are you sure?" I inquired.
"Absolutely. It was explained to our whole class at the seminary. Then I heard it again at campmeeting."
"What heresy is the pastor accused of teaching?"
"They said it was something called 'the morally influential theory.'"
"Actually it's pronounced 'moral influence,'" I corrected. "But do you know what this theory is all about?"
"I was hoping you could tell me. But at least I understand it has something to do with the cross and atonement. Evidently the pastor is confusing people by saying that Jesus didn't have to die."
"That's a very serious charge. Have you told many others about it?"

By listener request, here are biographies of our current facilitators, Daniel Duda and Jon Paulien:
Dr. Daniel Duda
Daniel Duda is currently President of the Trans-European Division in St. Albans, England. He served as the Education Director of the Division from 2005 to 2022, as Field Secretary and Adventist Mission Director between 2015 and 2022, and as Ministerial Secretary of the Division from 2005 to 2016. When he left Newbold for the TED in 2005, he was a Principal Lecturer in Biblical & Systematic Theology in the Department of Theological Studies at Newbold College of Higher Education in Bracknell. His doctorate is from Andrews University.
Prior to coming to Newbold in 1998, Daniel Duda served as a pastor, evangelist, Theology lecturer and Ministerial Secretary in the Czecho-Slovakian Union. He has also worked in Russia as Head of the Theology Department and Academic Dean at Zaoksky Theological Seminary (now Zaoksky Adventist University).
Daniel enjoys studying the Bible and sharing the results of his studies with others. He is a frequent speaker at camp meetings in Western, Central and Eastern Europe. His other interests include cars, computers and photography. He is married to Viera and they have two adult sons, Marek and Roman.
Jon Paulien, Ph.D.
Jon Paulien is Professor of Religion and Director of the Center for Understanding World Religions at Loma Linda University. Formerly (2007-2019) he was Dean of the School of Religion. He is the author of over 30 books and more than two hundred articles, scholarly papers (Society of Biblical Literature, Chicago Society for Biblical Research, and others) and other publications. Jon is a specialist in the study of the Johannine literature in the New Testament (Gospel of John and Book of Revelation) and the intersection of faith with contemporary culture. He also takes special delight in seminars and presentations to non-specialists who can make practical use of the material in the real world. When not at work, Jon enjoys being with his wife Pamella and their three children and three grandchildren. He also enjoys travel, golf and photography when time permits.
