Matthew

1 1This is the written record of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham, beginning with the family line:

2Abraham fathered* Isaac; and Isaac fathered Jacob; and Jacob fathered Judah and his brethren; 3and Judah fathered Perez and Zerah (their mother was Tamar); and Perez fathered Hezron; and Hezron fathered Ram; 4and Ram fathered Amminadab; and Amminadab fathered Nahshon; and Nahshon fathered Salmon; 5and Salmon fathered Boaz (their mother was Rahab); and Boaz fathered Obed (their mother was Ruth); and Obed fathered Jesse; 6and Jesse fathered King David. And David fathered Solomon (whose mother had been Uriah’s wife); 7and Solomon fathered Rehoboam; and Rehoboam fathered Abijah; and Abijah fathered Asa; 8and Asa fathered Jehoshaphat; and Jehoshaphat fathered Jehoram; and Jehoram fathered Uzziah; 9and Uzziah fathered Jotham; and Jotham fathered Ahaz; and Ahaz fathered Hezekiah; 10and Hezekiah fathered Manasseh; and Manasseh fathered Amon; and Amon fathered Josiah; 11and Josiah fathered Jehoiachin and his brothers, at the time of the exile to Babylon. 12And after the exile to Babylon, Jehoiachin fathered Shealtiel; and Shealtiel fathered Zerubbabel; 13and Zerubbabel fathered Abiud; and Abiud fathered Eliakim; and Eliakim fathered Azor; 14and Azor fathered Zadok; and Zadok fathered Akim; and Akim fathered Eliud; 15and Eliud fathered Eleazar; and Eleazar fathered Matthan; and Matthan fathered Jacob;

16and Jacob fathered Joseph, who was the husband of Mary, from whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ [the Messiah]*.

17So all the generations from Abraham up to David total fourteen; and from David up to the Babylonian exile total fourteen; and from the Babylonian exile up to Christ total fourteen.

18The birth of Jesus Christ came about like this: his mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph, but before they slept together she became pregnant by the Holy Spirit. 19Joseph, her husband-to-be, was a good man, and since he didn’t want to shame her publicly, he decided to quietly break the engagement.

John

1 1In the beginning the Word already was. The Word was together with God, and the Word was God. 2From the very beginning he was with God. 3 Everything came into existence through him; nothing was made without him. 4In him was life, the life that is the light of humanity. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not snuffed it out. *

6A man named John, sent by God, 7came as a witness to tell people of this light so that all might believe through him. 8He himself was not the light, but came to witness to the light. 9This light—the true light—was coming into the world to enlighten everyone. 10Though he was in the world, and even though the world was made through him, the world didn’t know him. 11He came to his own native land, but his own people didn’t receive him. 12But to those who actually did receive him—those who really put their trust in him—he gave the right to become God’s children 13These are the children born not by natural means or human desires, but born of God. 14The Word took on humanity as a man living among us, and we saw his glory—that of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.
