Quote of the Day

Quote July 31, 2010

Listen to your life.   See it for the fathomless mystery that it is. Touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it because in the last analysis all moments are sacred moments and life itself is grace. Frederick Buechner

Speaking Well of God
Presentation 10. In the End, God
[Edited transcript. This article preserves aspects of a spoken delivery]

It feels sad to say good evening for the last time.  I want to thank everybody for being part of this wonderful time together here in Bauru.

Tonight I want to talk about things in the end.  In the end, God, because right at the beginning of the Bible it is, “In the beginning, God.”  In the beginning, God; all the way through, God; in the end, God.  Because it is about God that we wish to speak.  Let’s not preach ourselves.  Let’s talk about God and focus always on Him.

I want to talk particularly tonight about hell! This sounds very strange to people. My wife asked me, “What are you talking about tonight?”  I told her, “I think I’ll talk about hell.”  She said, “Oh no!”

Presentation 9. What God Really Wants
[Edited transcript. This article preserves aspects of a spoken delivery]

Good afternoon to you all.  I will not make my wife suffer anymore with my poor Portuguese.  But I want to thank you again for this great invitation to share together with you and to speak well of God.  We’ve had a great time here already together with you.  Some wonderful discussions, a beautiful lunch, an interview, even, with the local newspaper, and then some lovely singing—thank you so much for the song.

You know, I think I might stay here, what do you think?  Should we stay here?  My wife is saying, “Yes.”  You know, I feel very much at home, so thank you so much for making us so welcome.

Thank you so much for being here in Bauru tonight.  And thank you so much for the invitation to share together with you over the next few days.  Thank you, Elder, for being here and inviting me in, and thank you to the person who will be doing the hardest job tonight.  This is my good friend, George Luis.  I want to thank the team that’s come along with us—who’ve helped us out so much already in our time there in Rio in Barra de Tijuca.

Let us ask the Lord to be with us as we begin.

I can’t believe we’re at the last night already.  I want to thank you again very, very deeply for this incredible privilege of sharing together with you.  I already feel like we know each other very well.  I’ve been able to have conversations with quite a few of you and I would like to be able to speak some more, especially if I spoke better Portuguese!  I hope this will not be the last time that we see each other.  I think I could probably come back here and spend a year, Pastor, and I’d be quite happy.

Speaking Well of God
Presentation 5.The God of Sacrifice and Blood

[Edited transcript. This article preserves aspects of a spoken delivery]

Good evening everyone.  I have to say I have appreciated so many things since I’ve been here.  Thank you Luis, for your singing.  Thank you, again, church and Pastor for the invitation to be here.  Thank you to my faithful translator who also took us out to see Christ the Redeemer statue on Corcovado today.  And thanks to everybody who’s been speaking to me in languages that I can understand.  It’s come to my notice as I’ve been speaking that quite a few of you understand what I’m saying without the help of my translator, so maybe we with just a few more English lessons we could do it all in English!  One of the added advantages of doing it this way is to produce the DVDs.  So I also want to thank the team of videographers here who are producing that DVD in order that that these messages don’t simply go out into the air and disappear, but will be useful for, I hope, for other people as they watch and listen.

Now I have to tell you that our subject for today, “The God of Sacrifice and Blood,” is going to be something of a heavy subject.  But I want to tackle this subject because so many people have spoken to me about it.  They say, “The God of the New Testament—that’s fine, I can appreciate Jesus and the God of the New Testament.  But the God of the Old Testament with all the blood and the sacrifices—what do we do with Him?”

I’ve even had people say, “I just don’t like Him at all. I only like the Jesus of the New Testament.”

Today I want to rescue the God of the Old Testament.  Just read what it says and I think you’ll find that the God of the Old Testament can speak in ways that are very surprising.
