A miscellany of reflections, thoughts, articles by Jonathan Gallagher, mirroring his interest in "God-thinking," the cosmic conflict, and fundamental human rights
“Thanks for taking the time to look around. I hope you find ideas of interest that will make a difference in the way you think and believe—thoughts to challenge the way we are! I believe in a healthy curiosity, and that we are supposed to use our minds to work things out. It’s not enough to rely on the thoughts of others—we all need to think for ourselves.
"So I’m delighted at your interest, and may you discover some points of departure so that you can say that you know what you believe, and are 'fully persuaded in your own mind.’”

As I lay awake the other night (I’ve been doing that quite a bit lately!) I was thinking: How many different places I’ve slept in! Of course, I prefer a nice, warm comfortable bed—and I expect you’re the same. Not many people would prefer some bed of nails or a wet park bench in winter.

The Parable of the Unloving Father: What is God NOT like! Prodigal had just got to the pig part—and was feeling really fed up with it all. That is he wasn't fed at all, and he'd been considering eating pig food, but nobody would even give him that.
Life up till then hadn't been too bad. He'd got away from home with a good cash settlement on his inheritance. Travel, fun and well, what hadn't he done? A really great time--until all he had was gone. And when the money ran out, so did his friends, leaving him in the... pigsty! |

I was standing thigh deep in an ice-cold river in Alaska. What had started as a bear-watching trip had turned into amazement at a wonderful spectacle of nature. We'd travelled by boat up the coast of Baranov Island to land at Nakrasina, an inlet shrouded by larch trees and tall eye-high grass. (And I wondered to myself what would happen if we should encounter a bear coming the other way!) As we arrived at the river mouth, the water was alive with salmon, threshing and splashing as they continued their strenuous journey back to the breeding grounds to spawn. Closer, at the water's edge, we could see them clearly--great fish of red, pink and white, their scales flashing brightly in the afternoon sun. |

The snow had come, unlooked for and unwanted. Bright white beauty all around, even woods “lovely, dark and deep,” and yet I knew I had many miles to go before I could even think about sleep. So much to do, and here was another unwelcome delay in the day. The snowstorm swirled around me as I left the safe warmth of the house and trudged out to the car. Thick it came, and fast, wrapping me in its fierce coldness like a mantle of ice.
“No, not today. Not anyday like this. Why? I just don’t need this. I need to do so much. I’m too busy. Enough already!” |

Every year we would make the long trip down to Cornwall in southwestern England to visit Grandmother. She lived with my aunt and cousins right by the sea, so this was always a vacation to look forward to.
When we arrived Grandmother always had some small gifts for us. And she would smile at our excitement, despite her pain and problems associated with Parkinson’s disease. One time I remember seeing her weeping when she thought no one was around, saying to herself, “How long must I stay in this vale of tears…”
I can still see in my mind’s eye the way down through the sand dunes to the beach. I remember the first time I saw the vast expanse of golden sand stretched out before me, inviting attention. A wonder of wonders, a New World to explore and develop.
